The Bottom Line

Automatic Lockers:

What are automatic lockers? Automatic lockers are lockers that are usually locked but automatically unlock and re-lock when you go around corners to allow the wheels to rotate at different rates.

What different types of automatic lockers are there? there are two common types of automatic lockers, "full" lockers and Lunchbox or Easy Lockers.

What are "full" lockers? Full automatic lockers replace the entire differential carrier with a locking mechanism, and are usually a bit stronger and have slightly better behavior on the road compared to lunchbox lockers, but are also more expensive.

What are lunchbox lockers? Lunchbox lockers, also known as easy lockers, use the stock carrier and replace the spider gear with a locking mechanism. This means that the setup is only as strong as the stock carrier, and can make them more prone to failure than otther locker types. These are usually the cheapest locker option, and have the least intensive installation process, being more often do-able at home when compared to other lockers.

How do these compare to selectable lockers? Automatic lockers may often lock and unlock unpredictably, especially in the snow, which can lead to clicking, banging, or lurching on the road and around corners in certain lockers, and can require a bit of "getting used to". However, quality automatic lockers will usually behave well enough on the road, and are often quiet enough for most people. They aren't likely to be completely "invisible" on the road like selectable lockers, but they rarely have "big" issues.

How do they compare off-road? While selectable lockers give you more flexability off-road, automatic lockers require less user input and can still increase your off-road capabilities incredibly over stock. They don't give you the option to unlock when you want though, and may not lock when you want them to 100% of the time. For most people though, they work more than well enough for the trail, Stubby has them for a reason!
