The Bottom Line

Armor:

What armor gives me the most benefits? The most common armor upgrade on Jeeps is aftermarket bumpers, but depending on the type of off-roading you do, it's likely that this isn't the most beneficial armor upgrade you can add to your Jeep. We would argue that good Rock Sliders or Skid Plates are more likely to offer the most important protection. Bumpers do however have other benefits, such as adding mounting space for a winch, which is a powerful recovery tool, and an aftermarket bumper can move out of the way of the tires compared to stock and let you get over taller obstacles.

Why those? Offroading rarely deals with head-on collisions, the goal is to avoid those, but Jeeps are constantly sliding around or dropping on rocks, so keep the protection where it counts! denting a grill or stock bumper sucks, but cracking an oil pan or differential, or puncturing a gas tank are really bad ways to end a ride, and are often more likely. Rock sliders can also help you navigate difficult rock obstacles, they're called "sliders" for a reason! A good set of rock sliders is angled to allow you to slide or pivot off of rocks you get set on, all while protecting your Jeep from damage.

Do I not need or want a fancy bumper then? Bumpers still offer useful protection to your Jeep, and science proves that they add at least 11 style points to your rig, so we don't recommend skipping them altogether, we just recommend you take into consideration what on your Jeep actually needs the protection most when you look for armor.

What about other armor? There's no magic answer for what armor is best for all Jeeps, so you'll have to keep in mind what it is you want to do with your Jeep. Maybe you don't go near rocks, but are always on really steep climbs, then you might not need skid plates or sliders, and an upgraded roll cage might add the most safety factor. Try to think about what's most likely to keep you and your Jeep safe more than what looks the coolest.

What else can I do to protect my Jeep? A more capable Jeep and a more experienced driver are some of the best "armor" a Jeep can have, learning what lines to pick off-road can protect your Jeep against all but the worst obstacles. Upgrades you might not consider "armor" can help too, lifts provide clearance, so you're less likely to hit rock at all rather than absorbing the hit with plates. Larger tires will pick up the differentials for clearance and also provide better traction, keeping you from sliding into rocks.
Overall, there are many ways to protect your Jeep, being safe and smart in a stock or well upgraded Jeep will protect you more than all the armor in world, but we'll still take the armor too.
